Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and film actress who is known for her role as the fierce lawyer Teri Joseph on the Showtime series Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe is her new name since she got married. While growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, she was always interested in acting. At an Maryland high school event during her first years of schooling, she won the prize for the most outstanding actress. She received her degree in acting from the New York University after working in the Washington Ballet Company' as well as in theatre. Contractor, who was raised by his parents in Nigeria and Mumbai when he was 7years old, traveled all over all over the world and had a taste of many cultures as a child. When she was seven through nine, she went to boarding school in London. Her family then relocated to Toronto which she stayed in through the majority of her childhood. Contractor had a great academic career in Toronto in addition to her training as a ballerina. At the Etobicoke School of the Arts (a public high school that specializes in the arts) she studied dance and theatre. At the age of 16, after nearly 10 years of dancing, Contractor decided to take up acting as a profession. She was awarded a full scholarship to study at the University of Toronto after graduating. There she earned her master's in theatre, and also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Contractor was offered the lead part in Pericles after a one-year stint at the University. She auditioned for it at Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and was awarded. She received rave reviews for her performance during the 92 performances that the play was voted as the best production by Canadian reviewers in 2002. The actress accepted an invitation to attend Stratford's conservatory. This is a course that allows only four males and eight females can attend an intensive 20-week course of classical theater. The role was secured for Contractor for the following season of shows She was also offered Hermia's part for the role of Hermia A Midsummer Night's Dream.
